Deep tissue massage uses slower, firmer pressure to reach deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around them. It is often used for stubborn tension, chronic tightness and areas that do not respond to lighter massage. If you are searching for deep tissue massage Pickering residents can book close to home, our registered massage therapists (RMTs) in Ajax adjust the pressure to your body, your goals and your comfort.
At Pickering Village Chiropractic & Massage, deep tissue techniques are one part of our massage therapy in Ajax, just a short drive from Pickering. This guide explains what deep tissue massage is, who it helps and what to expect.
What Is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage is a hands-on technique that works on the deeper muscles and fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds muscles. Your RMT uses slower strokes and sustained pressure to work through areas of tightness.
It is often combined with other techniques, such as trigger point therapy, which applies focused pressure to tight, tender spots in a muscle, and stretching.
Deep Tissue vs Relaxation Massage
Factor | Deep tissue massage | Relaxation massage |
|---|---|---|
Main goal | Release deep tension and tightness | Relax and reduce stress |
Pressure | Firm and focused | Light to moderate |
Pace | Slower, sustained strokes | Flowing, rhythmic strokes |
Focus | Specific problem areas | Often the whole body |
How you may feel after | Some soreness is possible | Relaxed |
Who Can Benefit From Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage may help if you have:
Chronic neck, shoulder or back tension
Tightness from desk work or long hours of driving
Repetitive strain from work or hobbies
Tension that builds up from training or sports
Tight spots or "knots" that keep coming back
Tension headaches linked to tight neck and shoulder muscles
If your pain comes from a stiff joint or your spine, chiropractic care may be the better first step. Read our guide to massage vs chiropractor to decide where to start.
Does Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?
Deep tissue massage should feel firm and focused, but it should not feel unbearable. "Deeper" does not mean "more painful." Good deep tissue work is about reaching the right layer of muscle, not pushing through pain.
Your RMT will check in about pressure throughout your session. Tell them right away if anything feels too intense, and they will adjust.
What to Expect After a Deep Tissue Massage
Some people feel mild soreness in the treated areas afterward, similar to the feeling after a workout. This usually eases on its own. To help your body recover:
Drink water and stay hydrated
Keep moving gently instead of staying still all day
Use the stretches or remedial exercises your RMT recommends
Let your RMT know at your next visit how your body responded
Who Should Avoid Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue pressure is not right for everyone. Tell your RMT about your health history, including:
Pregnancy, since pressure and positioning need to be adjusted. Learn more about prenatal massage in Ajax.
Recent injuries, surgery or fractures
Blood clots or bleeding disorders, or if you take blood-thinning medication
Skin conditions, open wounds or recent bruising in the treatment area
Your RMT will assess you before treatment and use a gentler approach when deep pressure is not appropriate.
How Long Should Your Session Be?
Deep tissue work takes time, so longer sessions often work better for larger areas.
Session length | Price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
30 minutes | $60 | One focused area, such as the neck and shoulders |
45 minutes | $80 | Two areas, such as the neck and upper back |
60 minutes | $100 | Several areas or a first visit |
90 minutes | $150 | Full-body treatment with deeper focus |
Prices include HST. Massage therapy is not covered by OHIP, but many extended health plans cover RMT treatment. Every receipt includes your therapist's registration number for insurance claims. See our full fee schedule.
